Artisans: 3 Action Steps For Etsy Sellers in 2016

As a handmade entrepreneur, you know that finding the right branding techniques on Etsy can be a determining factor in the success of your business. As a student in Northwestern University/ Coursera's Social Media Marketing Specialization program, I have found two articles that provide trends and best business practices in the Etsy marketplace.

The first article,"How this woman became the biggest seller on Etsy with $80,000 a month in sales", by Ashley Lutz [@AshleyLutz on Twitter] from The Business Insider. This article tells how Alicia Shaffer, owner of the Three Bird Nest Shop, became the most successful shop owner on Etsy. Lutz stresses the importance of excellent photography and titles in Ms. Shaffer's shop. Shaffer installed apps on her phone to increase the quality of the pictures and focused on flattering lighting. She gradually realized that she would stop treating her Etsy shop like a hobby and start treating it like a business. She hired an assistant to help manage her 20-hour workdays. Shaffer has since expanded her staff to 15 people who help make the products and ship out orders. (Three Bird Nest announced its decision to depart from the Etsy Marketplace in August, 2015. The decision was made by Three Bird Nest to leave Etsy in order to better focus on their customers through their own boutique website & wholesale channels.

The second article is "How To Be Successful On Etsy – The Ultimate Guide" by Jason Rueger [jrueger@fitsmallbusiness.com] from FitSmallBusiness.Com.
Mr. Rueger provides three important steps in building a handmade crafts business on Etsy. People buy handmade items because they want to invest in someone’s story. This is why developing and establishing your brand is so important. Rueger presents valuable information on how to make your shop stand out from the others and attract customers to your unique brand.

These articles provide practical information on how to build a successful Etsy business.

After reading these articles, I am recommending THREE ACTIONS that I recommend to entrepreneurs who want become leaders in the Etsy marketplace.

RESEARCH - The first thing to do is decide on the handmade item you want to sell on Etsy. Research is necessary to determine if there is a demand for your products. It is helpful to check-out your competition and determine how your products are unique and original.

BRANDING - Having great photo’s,enticing descriptions, and plenty of relevant tags will draw customers to your products. Tell your story, make a connection, and Etsy customers will respond to your unique products.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS - Focus on customer satisfaction and service. Positive reviews drive sales. Following up with customers can be a good way to stay connected and receive some valuable feedback.

I encourage you to use these action steps and start building a successful and rewarding handmade business today!
